Guest Post : Terri Planty

Friday, April 29th, 2011

I’m so excited for today’s guest post, the plantastic Bianca of Terri Planty recently played with one of our Woolly Pockets, the Wally! She’s a Los Angeles based artist who “loves to share the gardening lifestyle with others, because once you have the green thumb it feels so good!” Please check out some of Bianca’s amazing terrariums here. Now, take it away Bianca!

“In the beginning I got so indecisive, what shall I plant? I intended to hang the wally on my living room wall (the perfect finishing touch to may wall of art!). In that space I get the most sun – it is kind of like a green house, I have a wide variety of plants in that room growing successfully so the options were nearly limitless. I first bought a family of cacti and succulents – these are the plants that I am known for working with most often. I imagined creating a desert scene, however recently I have been reading a ton of books written in the 70s about houseplants. These books seduced me with their interiors of cascading vegetation, homes loaded with ferns and colorful foliage. So that was it. I was going bushy and loud. I returned to the flower mart and my local nursery and scored some bold and lush plantings…

I picked out a gorgeous and giant floral shaped bromeliad (neorgalia) that had a striking and strong form that reminded me a bit of a cartoon flower. I paired it with another bromeliad (vriesea) that has a red tail like bloom and black and dark green patterned leaves that echo a kind of reptilian graphic. I picked a red-veined prayer plant (maranta leuconeura erythroneura) as well, another great multi colored graphic leaf, although more delicate in its markings, adding some contrast to all the bold moments. Then a fern was totally in order, but I had to go with a hardy fern that didn’t require as much water considering the other plants going in. I went with an Australian sword fern or kimberly queen fern. I had also picked up a string of pearls and a small red edged dracaena – both of which I didn’t end up using. After hanging my wally up, it felt as if though it could us some more movement and interaction with the rest of the wall, perhaps more of a cascading effect, and that was when I went out seeking my lovely pink infused philodendron (naturally called the pink princess). I love this plant! It gave me that wild jungle in my house effect i was desiring and best of all n.a.s.a. determined that philodendrons were among the best house plants for removing formaldehyde from the air. I love knowing that my plants not only make the room look gorgeous but also serve a purpose.

All in all I am so pleased with the outcome. It feels like the wall is growing. I can never have enough plants in my home, but this woolly pocket offers a totally different and exciting way for me to display my love of plants. Before, I was running out of space with all my macrame hangers and terrariums galore, but with the wally it makes a statement and is such a playful way of indulging my need for plants everywhere. Plus, having the wally up amongst my beloved art collection, as an artist committed to horticulture, is the perfect way of bridging my two loves.”

Thanks for sharing your wally creation with us!

Gettin’ Woolly with Cambridge Elementary School

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
We Woollies really love getting pictures in our in-boxes. Woolly Walls, Woolly Floors and especially, Woolly School Gardens! Carol Espensen from Cambridge Elementary was kind enough to send us some pictures of her Woolly School Garden, with this sweet note:

Hi,
It took us a while, but WOW!  What a garden we have! We have 5 rolling carts with two pockets each.  That way the second graders can tend the plants and keep a close eye on changes.  We love them! I have attached some great photos.  Thank you, thank you for getting us started!  We have lots of seedling sprouting in the classroom so we can continue.  I can’t wait for next year – we can easily have seasonal gardens since everything is ready to go.  Carol Espensen, Cambridge Elementary, San Antonio, Texas.

Many thanks Carol and to all the kids. It’s so fun to see your garden grow! If you like what you see and want more info about setting up a School Garden at your school, go to www.woollyschoolgarden.org.
If you have pretty pictures of your Woolly Garden, please send them to justina (at) woollypocket (dot) com — we’d love to see what’s growing in your pockets!

Behind The Scenes

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Here’s a look at some behind the scenes of what the Woolly Team has been up to. Last week, we had a photo shoot for edibles at a beautiful home in Hollywood. We can’t wait to show you some of the final shots! Also, the team went out for lunch at Olvera Street and stuffed ourselves with delicious Mexican food and churros. And did you spot our Woolly hummingbird? Yes, he’s part of the team as well! Last Friday, which was Earth Day, this little fella was trapped in our studio so we gently guided him outdoors and nourished him with sweet water. After a little recuperation, he was zippin’ around in our Woolly garden again.

Painting With Plants

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Here at Woolly headquarters, we like to think of plants not only as lush greens but also as beautiful works of art. You can play it “up” by framing a Wally to transform it into a living painting. Or, create a Pocket cluster to create a living mural. Have fun and experiment with different ways to paint with your plants! In this video, Kevin will show us how to Paint with Plants– an activity which allows us to expiriment with plants in Pockets, an help get a sense of what a finished Living Painting can look like. Take it away, Kevin!

My Living Painting

Friday, April 15th, 2011

I just moved into a new house and so I was all too excited to get my Wallys up! I made it to a garden center today and picked up this gorgeous Croton plant.  We painted the wall behind the Wally and used a frame that we reclaimed from the curbside. Without glass, framing our living painting seemed like a great use for the formerly discarded frame. We had so much fun planting today, I hope you all get a chance to get your hands dirty with soil very soon! Have a plantastic weekend, friends!

Woolly yours,

~Justina

Getting Woolly Across the Pond…

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Etc. Magazine (pg. 89) and the lovely Debs Winrow of Garden House Design are getting ready to garden anywhere- This time, in the UK!  A sweet article that gives a nice Woolly introduction to Pockets to Europe, Debs suggests “colour coordinating” Pockets to your home. We LOVE that idea! Why not pick matching or beautifully contrasting colored plants for your Pockets? Thanks Debs and Etc. Magazine for the wonderful feature!

Happy Plants = Happy People

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Happy Friday everyone! I hope there’s some sunshine wherever you are. If not, don’t let that bring you down, try picking up a plant or two to cheer you up. Not only do plants healthify your home but they also make you happier! Studies show that plants make you feel more calm, more optimistic and contribute to overall well being. Also, hospital patients facing a garden in their rooms often recover more quickly than those facing a wall, says Bruno Cortis, M.D., a Chicago cardiologist. (You can check out more benefits here) Now, that explains why I haven’t been sick in forever (knock on wood!) and why I absolutely love the color green. This weekend, try adding a few lovely plants to make you a happy, Woolly camper!
